Laneway Festival

Now it's pretty obvious we're all super excited of next year's St. Jerome's Laneway Festival. Of course last year we had a slight mis-hap with the ticketing to attend the festival, however this year we intend to change that! We are ridculously excited (not to mention the idea of slumming it in a valley laneway) - to say the least and I'd just like to share a little something on the bands playing at this years festival.
Cloud Control

After seeing this lovely quartet on numerous occaisions, we still cannot get enough! And not to mention their debut album 'Bliss Release' was undoubtly uber cool and hippy-like. We will always remember their best song (yes, it's their best) 'Gold Canary' and the way the crowd soared above the sweaty tent at Splendour 2010.
Gotye

Who's Gotye you might ask? Well have you ever heard of The Basics from Melbourne? He is one-third of the indie-pop trio and is absoutely killing it! You may have heard his infamous song 'Heart's A Mess' on triple j a few years back which was released on his first album 'Like Drawing Blood.' He has also released a second album 'Mixed Blood' which basically is a compliation of all his previous tracks remixed which is what Gotye is all about!
The Holidays

Now these guys just released an awesome first new album, inspired by the likes of Mike Snow and Animal Collective. They've been around for a while now this pop quartet and we are just busting to see them at Laneway next year! You absolutely have to download their album, Post Paradise off iTunes!
Two Door Cinema Club

You've got to be excited to see these Irish fellows again at a festival after their spectacular performace at Splendour this year and who doesn't love a good red head? We will be front row to these guys at Laneway. There is nothing stopping us.

Cortez & The Crow
By Erin Ryan
Are you sick and tired of the same old music scene in Brisbane? Here's something different!
Introducing Cortez and the Crow, an indie duo who cross New York style hip hop with jazz.
Sound a little crazy? The pair says that their music is taking rap back to its roots. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of musical sources, Cortez & the Crow aim to bring the NY-style hip hop music and experience to the Brisbane music scene.
Kodiak Garcia and Dwayne Monteiro have an acoustic background but wanted to widen their approach to their compilations. As a result of being surrounded by jazz sounds at the Conservatory of Music in Brisbane, Kodiak thought it would be interesting to mix music genres together. And it worked.
The pair found inspiration from Blak Rok, when 11 rappers collaborated with The Black Keys, and blues rock was formed.
Recently signed up to Triple J Unearthed, come along to X&Y to check them out.
Check them out on Facebook or MySpace or better yet see them live at X&Y on Tuesday 26th October. Playing alongside Cortez and the Crow is the wonderfully talented indie-pop band Elly Dear. See you there!

Honey Month
by Jasmine Darlington-Rielly

I first discovered the Honey Month about 2 years ago; whilst at school with a mutual friend of theirs. At this point they had just done a complete restructuring of their sound going from a punk band, (at that time called “Choking Cats”) to what we now know as the Honey Month.
Since that time the boys have been getting plenty of exposure through Triple J’s UNEARTHED, 24th of September; this saw these indie folk darlings embark on a national landing them a spot at Splendor in the Grass. Their first EP “Foliage” was released on the tour.
Honey Month’s EP “Foliage” is available through JB HI and ITunes. They’re supporting You am I at the HI FI on 27th November tickets are $38.

Freelance Whales
Since our chat with them in Issue 4, the unstoppable Freelance Whales have continued to stir up the international music scene with their deliciously original tunes. The latest update from the Whales (again, we need to think of another nickname) is the release of the music video for 'Hannah'! Catch a glimpse of the people behind the magic in this beautifully shot video, premiering on Stereogum now. These American minstrels are surely a continuing force to be reckoned with.

Jose Gonzalez
With an understatedly sensuous baritone, Jose Gonzalez is surely the King of the Croon. Most recently, he has been featured on the soundtrack to the immensely popular ‘Red Dead Redemption’ by Rockstar Games. Here is an exclusive clip of Jose’s beautiful performance of his contribution ‘Far and Away’ on the roof top of Rockstar Games in New York City. With just guitar (and a few festive background Christmas lights!) this is Jose Gonzalez in all of his beautiful, unvarnished poignancy. This guy is going to go far, methinks.

Ashes of Corruption

Explosive yet concise, the debut album ‘U.S.S.A’ from heavy metal group ‘Ashes of Corruption’ is no drunken, backyard creation (you’d be surprised how many albums are created this way, just quietly). Not just a pile of crashes thrown into a crap-heap, this album is a thoughtfully structured, fantastically compiled piece of work. Put together by seasoned musicians from all sorts of backgrounds including opera, jazz and more, ‘U.S.S.A’ fine tunes the metal genre with its host of influences, giving it a completely original feel, yet also retaining the frenzied fieriness that metal-lovers adore. You can buy it in hard copy, iTunes or on Chaos and even if you’re not a metal fan we recommend you give it listen, you may be surprised!

Freelance Whales

Dreams can be funny things. Whether you’ve slipped down a psychedelic rabbit hole (thank you Lewis Carroll, you opium-sucking genius) or running away from an attractive Frenchman determined to kill you with a butter knife (thank you screwed up imagination) they are always food for story telling. In fact, crazy dreams are the inspiration for ‘Weathervanes’, a new album soon to be released by up-and-coming New York band ‘Freelance Whales’. This album is a completely fresh, creatively original, heartfelt piece of the human psyche served in haunting, melodic tones through a variety of instruments, some quite unusual! We had a lovely chat to Judah, the lead singer of the Whales (okay, we may have to rethink that nickname) who gave us the inside story to this beautiful piece of work and this extremely intriguing band. I have to say that it was one of the most engaging, interesting and fun interviews I’ve ever done! It’s our pleasure to be sharing it with you in the fourth issue of Ninety Two (hang in there, not long to go). Meanwhile, check out this video for their first single, ‘Generator ^2nd Floor’ to wet your palette for ‘Weathervanes’, available courtesy of Dew Process on August 20th! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSkjibDu8kM

Ernest Ellis

We love the debut album from Ernest Ellis! 'Hunting' is a beautiful exploration of nature and instinct through lovely melodies accompanied by a choir of synth harmonies. Written in a cabin in the Blue Mountains employing both orthadox and unorthadox methods of recording, Ernest Ellis has really hit the nail on the head with this stunning debut. Look out for our interview with him in Ninety Two issue four!
